  Our original plan was to go birding every other week throughout spring and early summer. However, with some travel days planned in May for Brian and us, we’ll adjust the schedule and aim to still go as often as possible to take advantage of the increasing migration activity. The migration doesn’t last very long and gives us an incredible opportunity to see a variety of birds that are not necessarily staying around here or that will become very difficult to see at a later date.

  With that in mind, we hope you can join us for an extra outing this Sunday, May 4. We will walk the Georgian Trail from Christie Beach Road toward Meaford for approx. 1 Km and retrace our steps. This is an easy walk at a leisurely pace. Brian will lead our next scheduled outing on May 11. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early as birding will start at 8:30 AM sharp.   We have arranged a private tour of the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant for our members.

  When you arrive you will have about 30 minutes to view their exhibit hall. At 11:00, there will be a welcome talk and video, with time to ask questions.

  This will be followed by a security check (you MUST bring government issued photo identification), and then a one hour guided bus tour of the facility.  After the tour, you can spend more time in the exhibit hall.

  The Bruce Power Visitor's Centre is about a 1.5 hour drive from Thornbury, so you may wish to consider car pooling (you can check the participant's list on our website to see with whom you might share a ride.)

  Due to the size of the bus, we are limited to 36 participants.

  On May 6th we will have our first golf game of the year at Tomahawk GC, just two days after opening. When we know how many members want to go out I will book starting times as close to 9:00 AM as possible.  The delayed course opening is due to wetness so hopefully, by the time we get out, it will have completely dried up.

  I will try to have a fun and/or challenging game for most weeks this season, but thought we should just focus on getting rid of the winter rust the first time out.  We will leave it to members who sign up to select their own foursomes.

  This hike is on a Wednesday at 10am.

  I will lead this approx 6.5 kms hike which takes about  2 hours. Pace and difficulty will be moderate. 

  As always, please ensure you have the physical ability to handle the length, difficulty and pace.

  Reminders and cancellations are only sent to those who register so please register if joining us in order to receive any changes or cancellations.

  Wonderful wilderness; primarily deciduous forest. We will follow the road north to the Bruce Trail, go out on the Bruce, do some "bush whacking", then come back on the Church route of the Kolapore trails. We will periodically stop to admire the spring wildflowers, hopefully red  white Trillium, Trout lily, Jack in the pulpit, and maybe some Harts Tongue fern etc. The terrain is moderate difficulty (no big hills) but LOTS of ups and downs, with some rocky and wet/muddy areas.

  Walking poles, hiking boots and water are recommended. Bug spray may be required.

• Hilts Falls Loop Hike

  This hike is on a Wednesday at 10am.

  Hike Details:  This is a new hike for many participants and it highlights the various geological levels shown in the Beaver Valley. From the parking area we will head east along a road allowance and the Bruce Trail into the Cuckoo Valley Overlook Nature Preserve, then turn onto the Stew Hilts Side Trail. Following the trail down into the valley we will pass numerous erratics and maybe Hart's Tongue fern. The view of the falls is closeup, muddy but marvellous.

  Difficulty: This is an easy hike if you don't mind going  down and up a very long hill, plus some additional ups and downs. It is likely to be muddy and we will cross some streams with chances of getting wet. Moderate pace. Distance only  3.1 kms however it feels more like 5. This trail is primarily hard pack with some rocky areas. However the close up view of the Hilts Falls and geological strata make it worth while. And there is also the reward of the view over to Cuckoo Valley at the top.  Time: Approx 1.75 hours

  As always, please ensure you have the physical ability to handle the length, difficulty and pace.

  Gardening Enthusiasts—Join us for an inspiring evening with Paul Zammit, award-winning horticulturist and internationally recognized speaker.

  Topic: Rethinking Beauty—Inspiring Gardeners in a Changing World.

  Paul Zammit is a highly regarded figure in the gardening world. A graduate of the University of Guelph, he is currently a professor at Niagara College. Prior to joining the faculty, Paul served as the Director of Horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden for 10 years. A passionate and energetic gardener, Paul has been inspiring audiences for over 30 years through presentations across Canada, the United States, and internationally in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, Bermuda, and South Africa. For the past decade, he has been a regular contributor on CBC’s Here and Now radio program, and in 2022, he became the weekly garden host on CBC’s Ontario Today.

  In addition to his horticultural expertise, Paul is an avid photographer. His articles and images have been featured in numerous gardening publications, including Fine Gardening magazine. In 2017, Garden Making magazine recognized Paul and his wife as two of Canada’s top 20 people shaping gardens nationwide. Paul has also led garden tours through England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland in 2019, 2023, and 2024, with more tours planned for 2025 and 2026. His contributions to the gardening community have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Garden Communicator of the Year award from Landscape Ontario in both 2019 and 2021, and the Educator Award from the Perennial Plant Association in 2023.

  Title:  The Unexpected Life of Mayor “Hurricane Hazel” McCallion

  As a retired Museum Curator, Annmarie Hagan has researched a number of untold and little-known Canadian stories. Join us for this exploration of Mayor Hazel’s surprising life and legacies.

  Hazel McCallion: When she died at the age of 101 in January 2023, former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion was mourned across Canada. And honoured in a State funeral. Born to humble roots on the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec on Valentine’s Day 1921, Hazel lived an inspiring and unexpected life.

  From her early days on a Women’s Pro Hockey team in Montreal, to leading Mississauga, one of Canada’s largest and fastest growing cities for 36 years, Hazel was a unique and outspoken leader. Even scandals couldn’t keep her down! 

  Annemarie Hagan is an award-winning curator and museum professional with over thirty-five years’ experience. From 1998 to 2014 she was Manager of the Museums of Mississauga, shepherding the growth of the museums, including the restorations of Benares Historic House, the Port Credit Log Cabin, and the Leslie Log House. More recently, she was Senior Curator, History at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum, and Archives (PAMA) in Brampton. Her work there included innovative collaborations with local Sikh, Muslim, Black, and Indigenous communities. A life-long history nerd, Annemarie has a B.A. in History and Women’s Studies from University of Toronto and an M.A. in Public History from University of Waterloo. Annemarie now enjoys a quiet life in the historic town of Fergus, Ontario.

We will ride around Lake Eugenia (approximately 25 km) and although it is a beautiful ride the challenge is in the hills that are both up and down, and we are not talking about 1 hill but quite a few.   We will be cycling the Tay Shore Trail from Midland to Waubashene and back. We will start at 10:00 AM to allow time to drive but please arrive 10 minutes early. 

  We cycle the 16.5 km section of the trail to the east then on our return we will stop at the Queen's Quay Pub (67 Juneau Road, Victoria Harbour) at the 26 km mark. After lunch on the patio we finish our total ride of 33 km.

  Walters Falls to Robson Lake and return.

  Bike Trail Details: 

  This ride is from Walter's Falls to Hines and Connell's lakes which is half way to Williamsford. It is an out and back route cycled on smaller and less travelled roads. It is all on pavement and the distance is approximately 23 km in total. The route is passing farms and some small communities and is quite flat but there is minimal shade, hence the earlier 9:30 AM start.

  Transportation: Members are responsible for their own transportation. Please leave yourself enough time to arrive 30 minutes before the performance. Travel time is approximately 1.5 hours from Thornbury.

  
  Refund Policy: As with past years, refunds will not be given. If you need to cancel before the event—and if there is a waiting list—we will put you in contact with waitlisted members to help you resell your ticket. But there is no guarantee that tickets can be resold. 

  Dinner Reservation: A group reservation for an early post theatre dinner  will be arranged closer to the date. Please indicate your intention to join the dinner during registration. You can still change your mind later! Members will be responsible for their own meal cost.

  Members Only: Due to limited seating, non-member spouses and guests are not permitted at this event. The option to "Add a Spouse/Partner" during registration is only intended for use by member couples that wish to register and pay together. Please remember to bring your PROBUS Name Tag!

  Jarvis Strong, Executive Director, Escaprment Corridor Alliance:
  Jarvis joined the ECA as the inaugural ED in March 2023. He has nearly 10 years of experience as a nonprofit Executive Director and has lived in the South Georgian Bay area since 2012. Before coming to the area Jarvis spent over 10 years managing summer camps and outdoor education organizations for children and youth. Previous to the ECA, Jarvis has led other charities including Camp Quality Canada, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Collingwood YMCA. Jarvis has an HBA from the University of Waterloo in Recreation & Parks.
