Mah Jongg is a game of Chinese origin, somewhat similar to the Western card game "rummy". It is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is usually played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuffled, dice are cast, then rituals involving the allocation and exchange of tiles begin. The first person to match a hand of 14 tiles and thus "call Mah Jongg" ends the game, whereupon tiles are scored, and a winner is declared. We play the American version which uses the National Mahjongg League’s yearly issued playing cards. These cards are available by mail each year. Members will need to purchase the new 2025 game card this year for $25 CDN. Each card has basic instructions for playing the game as well as the year’s approved “Hands”. The game can be played for points and/or money; we play JUST FOR FUN. Games usually last 2 hours. Players are arranged at tables of 3 or 4. We are currently meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 281 on Marsh Street, Clarksburg on the 1st Tuesday of each month and at St George's Anglican Church on Russell St, Clarksburg on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We are grateful for the use of these facilities and players are asked to make a $2 donation on game days to support the continued use of these facilities. |
