Back Roads Cycling #10 (July 23, 2026)

This is a Meaford Area Ride. Approx 33km.

Let's try this ride again and pray for good weather!! We will avoid Lakeshore Dr.

Leaving the harbour, ride over the bridge, turning right onto Bayfield. A quick left onto Nelson Dr. Thru the lights @ Sykes riding up the hill past the hospital for a sniff of oxygen! Road swings left becoming Pearson Rd. swinging right becomes Miller Rd & then Cnty Rd #12. Cross 7th Line. Second intersection @ stop sign turn left onto #112. Right @ 10th Side Rd. Rolling hills. Right @ Sydenham Twnshp Rd./#11th Line. Be aware of potholes! Right onto 16th Side Rd up hill. Turn left @ stop sign onto #112. Cross Hwy #26. Continue north turning right onto Side Rd #22. Pavement is questionable. Plenty of cracks. Watch your speed. Right @ stop sign onto 7th Line. Cross Hwy #26. At the stop sign turn left onto Cnty Rd #12. Follow staying to the right onto Miller. Down hill to stop sign turn slightly left onto Legion St riding past the park on right hand side. Left @ stop sign onto Cook St. Right onto Nelson. Thru lights @ Sykes turning right into back parking lot for McGinty's Cafe.

Coffee/ Tea Break on their back deck. From here back to the harbour. Approx 33km.

This week due to the extreme heat in the forecast our ride will begin @ 8:30AM. Please arrive 15mins prior so you're ready to ride on time.

Bring a matching pair of shoes that fit your bike.( I couldn't help myself)

Also some money for the coffee break. Public washrooms are available @ the harbour.

You are invited to join us for our annual July pot luck picnic event. This is a traditional pot luck dinner and you are asked to bring a food item, of your choice, ready to serve with the appropriate utensils and suitable for 8 servings. As well you are requested to bring your own dishes, cutlery, glasses and as usual your beverage of choice. Should you bring an allergy specific dish please label it as garlic, gluten free etc. to assist in accommodating our few members who do experience allergy issues.

Sheffield Park Black History and Cultural Museum Walking Tour (July 25, 2026)

Our PROBUS Club has arranged another private visit to The Sheffield Park Black History and Cultural Museum.

Don't miss out on this trip back in time, to learn about the history of the black pioneers and settlers in Simcoe and Grey County!

This is a self-guided tour. We will break into small groups to walk through the main exhibit and the rest of the grounds. If you prefer not to go inside, there is plenty to see as you walk around the property. Many of the collections in the various outbuildings can be seen from the outside.

The two main buildings are wheelchair and walker accessible. The grounds are not paved, but they are grassed and graded. Let us know, if you require any assistance.

We meet at 9:30 a.m. at Alpine Ski Resort, Arrowhead Road. Park in the Visiting Athletes parking lot on the right hand side as you drive in, close to Arrowhead Rd.

We will cycle the quiet streets and trails around the base of Blue Mountain. Before heading back, we will stop at the Village for coffee.

The cycle is about 14 km in total and takes an hour and a half.

Owen Sound to Shallow Lake (July 27, 2026)

We will ride the rail trail from Owen Sound to Shallow Lake The trail is a multi-use so not as good as the Georgian Trail, some ruts and puddles but bike friendly with a long easy climb as we leave OS and flat after that, it is primarily treed canopy with an open area of swampy meadow views. We'll also take the short side trail to actually view Shallow Lake, a well hidden gem. Then we return to the parking site . The total distance is 28 kms, there is an coffee shop in Shallow Lake so we will take a break there and for those who wish, we will go for Lunch at the Airport on Hwy 26 on our way home.

Directions and parking: Follow Hwy 26 to downtown Owen Sound, cross the river bridge and take the second right onto 2nd Avenue West which becomes the Eddie Sargent Park Way, after 1 1/2 km turn right into the Kelso Beach Park (GPS Location). From Thornbury it will take about an hour to drive, depending on traffic of course.

Please bring your Probus ID card with you, as it contains important emergency contact information.

Hiking #13 & Lunch (July 29, 2026)

Nottawasaga Lookout Loop Hike & Lunch (optional but fun)

This hike is on a Wednesday NOTE: 10am start

Hike Leader: Vicki

We start on the main Bruce Trail through a mature forest and head along the edge of the escarpment. We then descend to the start of the Standing Rock and Caves Side trail. We will pass a standing rock pillar isolated 80 m north of the escarpment edge. There will be lots of rocky crevices, through wonderful 'open to the sky' caves and then we climb back up to the main trail.

The hike is rated as "Difficult"— with rocky climbs, to slippery when wet crevices between dolostone blocks. Some jumbled rock debris. Please ensure you have the physical ability to hike this trail with no balance or mobility issues.

Distance is 3 km, taking approximately 1.5 hrs. Bruce Trail Map #23

Lunch will be at Mylar & Loreta’s in Singhampton. Please advise Vicki in advance if you will attend the lunch.

Please remember to bring water and bug spray. Hiking poles are a little awkward in climbing out of the caves, however I will be taking one.

Nipissing Ridge Trail is a lovely trail just south of the Georgian trail and west of Blue Mountain Road. It follows a stream, winding through a forest area. It is relatively flat, with a few inclines and declines. The path is well trodden and very popular. Many of you would have done this trail with the snowshoe group; it is a favourite local trail. Time: about 1- 1.5 hour

Welcome to the 3rd OUTDOOR Cocktails and Nibblies event of 2026.

We are squeezing an extra event in this month.
You are invited to participate in our outdoor cocktail events from 4 to 6:00 pm. Let's hope for good weather.

Remember to Bring an appetizer, ready and serving utensils of your choice to share with others. (Enough for aprox. 8 people). You will also need to bring your own beverage, and all utensils, (cutlery, glasses, plates etc). Let's make is easy for the hosts by taking your garbage and dirty dishes home to wash.

If WE need to cancel an email will go out as soon as possible, but could be a couple of hours before the event. (Look for a last minute email as the rain/ weather can change just before 4 pm). If YOU need to cancel please let me know.
If the event is full, make sure you add your name to the Waitlist, then check your emails to see if at a later date you were added.

Lawn Bowling & BBQ 2026 (August 07, 2026)

We're going lawn bowling again in Meaford! We've organized a lawn bowling event for the past 3 years, and it's really a lot of fun!

Lawn bowling is a low-impact exercise that includes walking, bending and stretching—suitable for all fitness levels. No prior experience is needed! We will be given a 10-minute lesson in the basics of the game, and then be divided into teams to play, with volunteers from the Club helping us.

The only specific dress requirement is flat, soft-soled shoes, with no open heels or toes (in case you drop a ball!) and no spikes or cleats. We also highly recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat and applying sunscreen, as there’s no shade on the lawn.

The BBQ following the bowling will consist of sausages or hamburgers (you will be asked to indicate your choice when you register), and salads, a variety of cold non-alcoholic drinks, tea, coffee, and dessert.

Unfortunately, the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club sustained some damage to the playing area with last winter's ice. As a result, we cannot use the entire playing surface, so are limited to 32 participants

This is an "in and out" cycle. We will meet at Christie Beach and ride east along Sunset Blvd., stopping at some of the beaches along the way. At Lora Bay, we will join the Georgian trail. We take the trail east to Thornbury, stopping at Little River Beach, near the pier. Our final beach stop will be the west side, of Bayview park. We will return on the Georgian trail. Coffee will be at Ilene's home after the ride.

Tiny Trail: Wyevale to Penatang and return: 30 km

At the lights in Wyevale turn right onto Conc Rd. 5 E, there is a parking lot on the left before the School. For those who use "what3words" irritable.picture.evolve

Bike Trail Details:

This is one of my favorites, the Tiny Trail from Wyevale to Penetanguishene. The ride will last 2 hrs. and be 15km each way (30km).

We will be on a wonderful Rail Trail with great views of the countryside, farms, a golf course, the Blue Mountains (far far away) and of course the Penatang Harbour.

It is a flat trail until 5 km from Penatang where we will cross the Copeland Creek 10 times with ups and downs each time…. This is the fun part and we get to do again on the way back.

We will take a water break at the Champlain Statue in the park in Penatang, there is Chip wagon nearby for riders that have worked up a appetite, then we return to Wyevale for the world’s best soft serve Ice Cream at the Jug City.

Bike Trail Details: This week's ride is from Williamsford to Connell & Hines Lake and it is on quiet paved country roads and past beautiful scenery and no major hills. The ride is approximately 28 km long and we will rest and enjoy the peace, quiet and a swim at Hines Lake.

Kemble Loop ... 10 AM start to allow for travel

Meeting Place: Intersection of Grey Road # 1 and Kemble Rock Road, parking lot of the Kemble Women's Institute lookout North of OS.

Bike Trail Details: This ride is going from the area of Kemble and up to Big Bay with the return route being Grey Road # 1 along the Bay. It is beautiful scenery and there are some hills and gravel, the effort is well worth it but getting closer to the Fall we are all in shape after many rides.

Please remember to bring your helmet, contact information card, put on sunscreen and bring water or other beverage of your choice.

E-Bikes & Explorators - Welland Bike Trip (September 09, 2026)

This two-night bike trip to Welland is planned for after Labour Day and is open to members of the E- Bike and Explorators Activity Group. We will be staying at the Best Western Rose City Suites, conveniently located just steps from the Welland Canal recreational trail.

The hotel is bike-friendly and offers a secure storage room for bicycles; guests also have the option of bringing their bikes into their rooms. A complimentary breakfast is included each morning.

Participation is limited to 30 riders. If the trip fills up, please add your name to the waitlist. Single participants who would like to share a room are welcome, and we will do our best to arrange suitable roommate matches.

Day 3 - Fri Sept 11: Return home or go to a matinee at the Shaw then return home.

Travel: Le Petit Train du Nord Cycling Trip (September 13, 2026)

Join us for an 8-day scenic cycling tour along Quebec’s famous Petit Train du Nord, with charming villages, restaurants, microbreweries, and beaches along the way. The tour accommodates 14–24 cyclists, with luggage transferred daily and includes accommodations in lovely inns, breakfasts, one dinner, maps, itinerary, and guide support. A shuttle transfers participants from Saint-Jérôme to Mont-Laurier, where the journey begins with a 44 km loop ride, followed by a four-day ride back to Saint-Jérôme (207 km total) at about 50 km per day, staying inn to inn. Our September DIning Around Town is at Marilynne Restaurant in Markdale. We must have a minimum of 35 members as the restaurant is opening up especially for us.

The meal is served "Family Style". Dinner is $43.00 plus tax & gratuity.

At times it is paid parking at Hibou (a Grey Sauble Conservation Authority (GSCA) pass will let you park for free, there is also some parking at the entrance, Chances are the lot won't be Supervised on a Monday in Sept. There is a washroom at Hibou.

Bike Trail Details: This weeks ride will explore the area around Leith and Annan. . We will follow Bayshore Road along the Bay, head to the upper bench on SR 18 and through Annan on CR 15 to Tom Thomson Lane to Leith then back to Hibou Conservation area and yes there are both hills up and down and some Gravel

Lunch: We will have Lunch at the old Owen Sound Airport, its a great restaurant called Williams on 26 .

Details: We will have a mystery ride, well not so much a mystery as we did it last year. After the ride you invited to our house for a end of season gathering, there will be Coffee and treats and we may be able to find some Beer and Wine.

We will provide the snacks and drinks but as it will be Noon when we return from the ride and you may be hungry and wish to bring a lunch to picnic on our deck.

We could talk about the 2027 riding season and next years overnight trip.

Golf Tournament 2027 (June 15, 2027)

SAVE THE DATE:

We are excited to announce the 2027 annual golf tournament! The price includes 18 holes of golf with cart, coffee and muffin to start, followed by a BBQ lunch and prizes after the golf.

The format is "Team scramble - 18 holes".

As with past tournaments, the teams will be assigned by the organizers to balance the teams and encourage meeting new members. We will consider preferred pairs by request only. You are welcome to register a non-member guest for this event!

Lunch options are: chicken on a bun, hamburger or a veggie burger or an egg salad sandwich and a choice of two side dishes: country potato salad, pasta salad, garden salad or Caesar salad.

Inclement Weather Policy: Cancellation of the tournament will be considered only if the Shelburne Golf and Country Club officially closes the course to all play. This will be determined using R&A standards for play whereby dangerous weather prevents safe play on the course. Beyond this we will play—rain or shine. If the tournament is cancelled, we will reschedule based on availability of requested rain date.
